Contact with alien intelligence—if it were to occur—could very well be the most significant transformative event, for better or worse, in all of human history. From its earliest beginnings, science fiction has thoughtfully speculated on the possibilities of intelligent alien life and alien civilizations. More than any other sphere of inquiry, science fiction has envisioned an immense and diverse assortment of alien biologies, ecologies, minds, and civilizations. And moreover, science fiction has considered a host of different types of scenarios of human-alien contact from the benign and uplifting to the disastrous and earth-shattering.
